Arts and antiquities forum

by Mark Rowe

The first International Arts & Antiquities Security Forum (IAASF) ran at the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead in November, a one-day conference. The second, two-day IAASF is running in London, on November 23 and 24.

The theme, at Westminster Cathedral Hall, will be ‘Protecting Cultural Venues from Adversarial Risks’. Topics as at the first forum will range from terrorism and other criminal threats to physical and personnel security, and ‘target hardening’, to non-security risks such as fire, and how to insure.

At the second forum as at the first there’s an international flavour. Speakers include Declan Garrett, from the National Gallery of Ireland, a return speaker, who in 2016 described his work as security and safety manager at the Dublin landmark. Another return speaker is William Brown of Arts Council England, who last year spoke of his work assessing and advising on security risks of collections, buildings and the transport of heritage objects, to make possible the reciprocal loaning of precious objects for public display.

Other speakers for 2017 include Garry Evanson, the chairman of the Security Institute and Head of Security and Emergency Planning at Westminster Abbey; and Robert A Carotenuto – a rare holder of the three ASIS qualifications CPP, PCI and PSP – who’s Associate Vice President for Security at The New York Botanical Garden, where he has been head of security since 2010.
