Roy's Monthly Gossip

London the place to be seen: September 2014

by Mark Rowe

London is the place to be seen, so it seems. This month the industry is very quiet. It seems that after IFSEC there’s a lull in gossip and business.

Well, unless you are working for Tyco Security Products. Alan Riegler rang me to tell me that things were going really well for the company, so much so that he is recruiting five, yes five, extra field sales guys and one technical guy. So if you’re looking to move then drop Alan an email, [email protected], or me, and I will pass it on.

Update your diary
Here we are September already and I thought it might be time to update your diary, as there’s lots happening over the next few months. On Tuesday, September 9, the Security Institute are holding their annual conference called the Future of Security at the Thistle Hotel in Marble Arch. We will of course be there. The Wednesday after on September 17, the CCTV firm Dallmeier are holding what they are calling a MFS Technology product launch day, in Canary Wharf.

Dinners
Then the next week is Essen, the show every other year in Germany, which I will be visiting from Wednesday to the Friday. However on the Thursday night (25) the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals is holding a dinner with the City of London Police Commissioner Adrian Leppard QPM at the offices of JP Morgan bank in Canary Wharf. And then at the end of the month on Tuesday, 30th is the security associations’ dinner. The UK security trade bodies namely the Security Institute, IPSA, ASIS (UK chapter), the City of London Crime prevention Association, and the defence trade body ADS Group are delivering an inaugural Joint Security Associations Annual Fundraising event, at the Grange City Hotel, overlooking the Tower of London. It will be a black tie event and will offer attendees a valuable networking opportunity, while also aiding two worthy charities. Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE QC will speak at the event and the organisers are hoping to raise more than £40,000, to be split equally between two charities: St Giles Trust which seeks to help reformed ex-offenders; and PTSD Resolution, which offers counselling to the UK Armed Forces, TA and Regular Reserves, and their dependants to relieve mental health problems resulting from military service.

IPSA board
And that’s just September. Looking further forward to October, we have Consec, the Association of Security Consultants’ annual conference and exhibition on Thursday, October 2 at the Marriott Hotel on Bath Road, over the road from Heathrow. The evening before they will be holding a dinner where we will present the Women in Security awards. Have you got your nominations in yet? You had better hurry as you only have till the end of the month. Visit our website and click on the ‘WIS’ section. Click on one of the headings in the red bar on the top of the page to make your nomination. And talking of WIS awards, were you aware that Jane Farrell of Sodexo, one of our winners last year, has been elected to the IPSA board. She is the manager of the company’s Centre of Excellence development and has worked for the company for 32 years.

More dinners
On Monday, October 13 is the Worshipful Company’s annual dinner, this year in the Merchant Taylors Hall in Threadneedle Street, in the City. October 20 sees the Total Security Summit at the Radisson Blu hotel in Stansted and then we also have our next Security TWENTY 14 conference and exhibition, also at Heathrow, in the Park Inn Hotel this time just down the road from Consec. So it seems that London is the place to be as most of these events are in the big city.

Retiring
So what about the midsummer movers? Well David Jenkins at ISM is retiring in the same year that the company enjoys its 25th anniversary. David has built an enviable legacy for the British manufacturing brand. Stephen Smith, Sales and Marketing Director will become the new Managing Director. When asked if he had achieved everything he set out to achieve, Jenkins said: “Our plans for global success are now bearing fruit. America, South Africa, Dubai, Kuwait and India are just five of the countries we have a strong and growing presence in.” David was a founding member of the first body to control the standards in the intruder and alarm industry (NSCIA). He worked alongside the director generals of the NSCIA to establish certification of intruder alarm installations, making the first BS standards (BS 4737).

Three recruits
Videcon PLC has three new recruits. Katie Ward and Ian Avanzo join the field sales reps as extra support in the south west and south east. They will be available to visit customers and offer demonstrations on all products across the Concept Pro range as well as being on hand for general queries. The Heckmondwike-based firm has also added Adam Shefta to their internal sales department, who will provide personal account management as a first point of call.
