Banham visit

by Mark Rowe

We have made a return visit to the London-based, family-owned security firm Banham, that’s celebrating its 90th birthday with a party in September – but otherwise it’s very much looking to the future.

We visited the company’s new premises in south-east London, over the road from Earlsfield railway station, at the official unveiling in October, as featured in the December 2015 print issue of Professional Security magazine.

That 90th party will have a 1926 theme. Banham MD Martin Herbert told Professional Security that the firm is holding a competition with the Royal College of Art. Students (past and present) could mark the 90th with a work of art, on the themes of Banham, and security. There are five finalists, and the winner will be on display at the September event. The others will go on show at the company’s showrooms.

Otherwise, the company is very much looking to the future; for example, in February the Banham Academy for training its own (and other companies’) apprentices opened its doors. The company places much store in its apprentices and its purpose-built two-storey Academy – which had a mention at the BSIA annual luncheon in mid-July. And the Academy’s trainees were among heat winners at the Engineers of Tomorrow competition over the three days of IFSEC 2016 in June. Banham has also been a member from the start of the employers group for the security and emergency systems Trailblazer scheme, overhauling the course content for electronic security installer apprentices.

More words and pictures in the September 2016 print issue of Professional Security. Pictured; one of the panels for apprentices to train on.
