Conservative Party leader David Cameron has called for greater co-operation between Britain and Pakistan, to promote democracy and tackle extremism.
In a speech in Islamabad, he stressed that at this key moment in Pakistan’s history, with a presidential election just days away, there was a real chance to forge a closer alliance in the battle against terrorism.
And he argued that there was "no room for ambivalence" in the fight against extremism, and that the Pakistan Government must bear down on Taliban activity in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of the country.
The Tory leader also said that we must learn from our mistakes in Iraq and Afghanistan, and demonstrate patience and humility in the promotion of democracy: "Democracy should be the work of patient craftsmanship and not of a uniform mass production line, if the final product is to be of a quality that endures."
