They’re off! We’ll feature the May 5 general election in a couple of pages in our May print issue. Meanwhile:
Tory leader Michael Howard launched the Conservative election campaign saying among other things: "We will cut crime by each year putting 5000 more police officers – real police officers – on our streets and introducing tougher sentences for burglars and drug dealers."
The Lib Dems have brought out their manifesto to do with law and order already.
Calling the election, Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "I believe in a … country where people who play by the rules get on and those that don’t, don’t. A country that protects itself against the terrorist threat that we face.
"It’s going to be about how we move our education system forward … How we keep the investment going in our police and community support officers and complete the reform of our criminal justice system.
