Ethernet Module

by msecadm4921

Ademco Microtech launched the new Ethernet Module at IFSEC.

The module provides a new channel for alarm signalling to a third party device that is faster than traditional dial up lines, according to the manufacturers. It will enable maintenance engineers to conduct remote servicing. They will be able to dial in to the panel from a PC anywhere on the network LAN or WAN and will be able to change the status of the panel as well as change the programming of it. This function will save time and costs, say Ademco. Other cost savings will result when users will no longer have to pay for telephone calls or line rentals.

Through encryption the module provides increased security of communication of information on the network, the makers say. It gives a supervised path for the dial-up connection and back-up signalling if required. The system will check periodically that the dial-up destination is there and will flag up a warning if it is not. The module will use an alternative-signalling path, so that it will automatically detect if the primary path is not there, to alert installers, and then divert to the other signalling path. As we reported in our May issue, Drew Aitken, Senior Product Manager at Ademco Microtech, presented a seminar at IFSEC on how intruder systems can now use ethernet communications. <br>
Drew comments: "The Ethernet connection built into the Galaxy alarm panel is a significant development for Ademco Microtech. Previously, Ethernet communications have only been available using third party devices, with the drawback that you are always dependent on them. Not only are they quite expensive, but they also have to be programmed offline on a PC, then connected to the network. We configure our unit online. Our ethernet module is connected to the panel and this is why it gives you full integration at a lower cost."
