At all Citizen Offices in the city, Berlin’s identity card authorities are now employing the Wacom LCD signature tablet, STU-500 for processing applications for the new identity card.
All Berlin residents who have applied for a new identity card since November will give all the required signatures via a Wacom signature tablet. This also includes the signature that subsequently appears on the actual identity card itself. Altogether, more than 650 STU-500 LCD signature tablets are in operation around the German capital.
Project leader Manuela Sandhop, of the Central Office for Inhabitant Affairs, says: “By fully digitising our processes, we not only speed them up, but also produce some 1.2 million documents less per year. That’s approximately two tons of paper. So we are not only saving money, but also conserving the environment.”
The application for signature tablets came about through the collaboration between Wacom and the Federal Printing Office. The bCore module of the Federal Printing Office enables all authorities in Germany to use Wacom STU-300 und STU-500 tablets without having to install additional drivers. The STU tablets have been approved by the Federal Printing Office for all of its applications.
The STU-500 LCD signature tablet used in Berlin has been designed specially to capture digital signatures. It has a compact five-inch LC display. While people are writing their signature on the tablet, the display of the STU-500 shows the signature in real time. The tablet’s special design simulates the feel of writing on real paper.
