Industry Summit

The BSI (British Standards Institution) is running a private security industry summit in London SW5 on October 18 and 19.

Topics at the Kensington Marriott Hotel include the Security Industry Authority’s approved contractor scheme (Andrew Shepherd, Assistant Director ACS, SIA); David Dickinson, BSIA Chief Executive, is invited to evaluate regulation; Bert van Langeveld, Chief Executive, Euralarm, will discuss European matters – the XPG (cross party group, lobbying Euro-MPs), and the services directive. Invited to give a view of what insurers want from clients and the security sector is Mike Jay, Convenor, IPCres (Insurers Property Crime Research Group).

Peter Davies, lead on security industry liaison, Association of Chief Police Officers; and Lincolnshire Police Acting Deputy Chief Constable, will speak on police and private security co-ordination, for example false alarm managing and working with DD 243. Liz Ogden, HR Director, G4S Security Services (UK), will cover human resources issues such as recruitment and retention, free movement of labour in the EU, any skills gaps, and ways towards staff progression and succession planning for critical roles. Stuart Lowden, Managing Director, Wilson James will cover ‘best business strategies to improve profit margins’. Invited to discuss crime and security trends is Prof Martin Gill, Director, Perpetuity Research and Consultancy International. Mike Alexander, Head of Business Security and Safety, Henderson Global Investors, will give a client’s perspective: on any improvement after SIA licensing; what he wants from alarm physical and manned security contract providers. Nicki Dennis, Head of Market Development – Security, BSI will ask if standards have delivered better systems and security. Geoff Tate, Chief Executive, Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB), will look at developments in alarms and electronic security standards. John Walker, Head of Operational Security, Experian, will consider integration of security systems with computer networks and new technologies – trends such as ‘intelligent buildings’, biometrics, and the growing role of the IT manager in company security. Internet protocol (IP) is the topic for James Winter, Industry & Standards Liaison Manager, BT Redcare, who chairs GW/1 Electronic Security Systems Committee at the BSI. Pauline Norstrom, Group Head of Marketing, AD Group; and chair of the BSIA CCTV section, will cover CCTV and surveillance developments. Digby Ram, Managing Director, IBP International Ltd will look at cash in transit and bank note degradation, and the secure destruction of confidential material. Derek Smith, Business Services Director; Legion Group Plc; and chair, GW/3/9 Security Screening and GW/3/11 Revision of BS 7499 committees at the BSI will discuss the British Standards BS 7858:2006 (security screening of individuals employed in a security environment); BS 7499 review (static site guarding and mobile patrol services; BS 7984 (amendments on key holding) and standards for security consultants. Alex Carmichael, Director of Technical & Membership Services, BSIA will give news of other UK and European standards.

Jonathan Grey, Managing Director, Nova Risk Management will lead a workshop on the security screening standard BS 7858 – covering for instance why security screen potential staff? and data protection and Freedom of Information . Ken Livingstone, Director of Training, Perpetuity Training, will take workshops on risk assessments, and how to conduct a security survey and audit. Brian Fenwick, Director, Security Risk Management Limited, will talk on the need for security firms to adopt business continuity (BC).
