The former Rolls Estate in Chancery Lane was chosen as a library to securely house the large collection of rare science books belonging to Kings College London.
In the centre of the City, Chancery Lane Library, this Grade II listed Victorian Gothic building, will become King?s newest library and information services centre. Formerly home to the Public Records Office, the library opened to students and staff in early 2002 after around 750,000 books came from the Strand and Hampstead campuses. Evolution Electronic Security systems were chosen to provide security and surveillance, including a digital CCTV system. Working with a listed building imposed restrictions. Aesthetics were as important as camera functionality. Evolution specified Silent Witness domes and Vicon fully functional domes for installation. During the tender process, Kings College were also invited to demonstrations of digital CCTV systems. The choice narrowed to Geutebrck?s PC-based Multiscope II system. A total of four Multiscope II 32-channel digital recorders were required to record and control the 115 colour and colour-mono cameras. Coupled together using a private TCP/IP network any of the system operators can view live and recorded images from any of the cameras positioned internally and externally around the building. Using Geutebrck?s video motion detection software module for internal cameras and Redwall detectors for the external cameras, all activity is recorded directly on to 600Gb of internal disk space.
