by msecadm4921

A second night of rioting and looting of shops in suburban London followed the death of a man in Tottenham on Saturday, August 6.

In a statement, the Met Police said that officers responding to sporadic disorder in a number of boroughs made more than 100 arrests throughout Sunday night and early this morning.

"This is in addition to the 61 arrests made on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

"So far there have been 16 charges (burglary, points and blades, theft, POCA, violent disorder), 11 awaiting CPS advice, 17 bailed, 1 caution, 1 sectioned under the Mental Health Act and there are 15 ongoing enquiries.

"Officers are shocked at the outrageous level of violence directed against them. At least nine officers were injured overnight in addition to the 26 injured on Saturday night.

"We will not tolerate this disgraceful violence. The investigation continues to bring these criminals to justice."

For example in Walthamstow Central more than 30 youths, many in masks, vandalised and looted a number shops including BHS. Rival gangs attended Kings College Hospital after two victims of minor stabbings were admitted resulting in a fight. The hospital brought in additional security for the remainder of Sunday night. Enfield, Brixton and Oxford Circus in the West End also saw trouble. Tesco and Footlocker were among the high street names who had branches attacked.

The Home Secretary Theresa May voiced her support for Metropolitan Police officers who dealt with violence in London.

She said: ‘I condemn utterly the violence in Tottenham last night. Such disregard for public safety and property will not be tolerated, and the Metropolitan Police have my full support in restoring order.

’I want to pay tribute to the officers who put themselves in harm’s way.'

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is condemning the weekend’s London rioting, saying community difficulties will not be helped by torching shops.

Director General of the British Retail Consortium, Stephen Robertson, said: “I deplore the violence and property damage inflicted by these criminal actions. I have the greatest sympathy for those who’ve lost businesses, staff whose jobs are now in jeopardy and customers now without local services.

“There may be genuine economic or community relations grievances in these areas but they will not be helped by torching shops.

“Retail is at the heart of thriving communities. Clearly, with high streets under pressure anyway, at least some of the businesses destroyed will not be able to re-establish themselves, causing long-term damage.

“And, at a time when some of London’s most deprived areas are looking forward to a substantial spending boost from visitors to next year’s Olympics, this sends an appalling message to would-be tourists around the world.”

The local Labour MP, former minister David Lammy, said: "The scenes currently taking place in our community are not representative of the vast majority of people in Tottenham. Those who remember the destructive conflicts of the past will be determined not to go back to them.

"We already have one grieving family in our community and further violence will not heal that pain. True justice can only follow a thorough investigation of the facts.

The Tottenham community and Mark Duggan’s family and friends need to understand what happened on Thursday evening when Mark lost his life. To understand those facts, we must have calm."
