A Street Wardens scheme is being expanded across the city of Oxford and they will now be patrolling streets in Wood Farm and Barton.
A further six wardens will be working to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and local environmental concerns. Each area will have a Senior Street Warden and a team of four Street Wardens working as the eyes and ears of the community.
What they say
Councillor Susan Brown, Executive Member for Crime and Community Safety, says: "We felt it was very important to expand this successful scheme to other parts of the City. I know that local residents in Wood Farm and Barton will welcome their presence. Uniformed Street Wardens in our communities acts as an important visible deterrent, helping to crack down on street crime and anti-social behaviour.
"They also do very valuable work improving the local environment by reporting abandoned cars, graffiti and fly-tipping. They have worked well with both young people and older residents and there has been a great deal of positive feedback from local people and businesses in the areas they cover."
The Street Wardens have also received new orange and navy bomber jackets to go with their existing uniforms. The wardens scheme has already been running for two and a half years operating in Blackbird Leys, Northfield Brook, Rose Hill and Littlemore. The wardens will be employed by Oxford City Council and will work with other Government agencies, including Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire County Council, and voluntary groups.
