A safety tool that is aimed at preventing drinks from being spiked has been introduced in Bedford town centre pubs and clubs following a trial.
Spikey is a little gadget which fixes in to the top of drink bottles to form a barrier to prevent drinks being tampered with. The plastic cylinder fits round a straw meaning you can still enjoy your drink, it is claimed. Town centre pub and club goers will be given the option of having a Spikey when they buy bottled drinks.
Bed:Safe – Bedford’s night-time safety initiative – has bought 20,000 Spikeys and issued them to all town centre pubs and clubs who are part of the scheme. The Licensees Forum, which is introducing them, will contribute to the ongoing costs of providing Spikeys for use by pub and club goers.
A Bed:Safe spokesperson said: “Drink spiking is not a big problem locally but it is a national issue and we want to ensure it does not develop in Bedford. Spikeys will help keep town centre drinkers safe and we hope many of them will try these gadgets when they buy their drinks.”
