VCR Is History

The VCR is history and long overdue for replacement. So a seminar on the future of CCTV heard. Mike Holt, Chairman of seminar organisers Sirrus, said that it was time to stop paying lip-service to internet protocol networks and associated technologies. He told the Windsor event: ?While 90 per cent of networks are now IT-based, this capacity is not being exploited from a CCTV perspective. The internet is never going to be ?unplugged?, but only get better and faster, paving the way for IP networks to blossom. Recording directly to network storage is in its infancy but poised for rapid growth. For example one of our clients had 1,300 cameras covering a site and wanted footage recorded, from each camera, every 30 seconds for a month. In VCR terms this is nearly unthinkable as an estimated 45,000 tapes would have been needed. But with IP it was condensed down to 120 million megabytes, and could be physically stored in the space of a small table.? Sirrus produces systems that work with computer networks and the internet to deliver CCTV images. Speakers from Sirrus partners Axis Communications (Chris Brown) and Vision Factory (David Mulcahy) explained their network-compatible products to the security and IT audience. Another speaker, IBM Technical Consultant John Lymer, spoke of a leap in the availability of low-cost IP storage, simple to access. Visit www.sirrus.co.uk
