CTSP launching

by Mark Rowe

The CTSP, ‘Certified Technical Security Professional’, is launching on September 1. Briefly, it’ll be a register recognising competence and qualifications for installers and those who maintain fire and security systems. Registrants will be listed on a searchable website, so that the public and users of services can check use of the standard.

Its organisers Tavcom Training, part of Linx International, aired the upcoming CTSP at the IFSEC 2017 show in London in June, and the Security TWENTY 17 exhibition in Harrogate in July. At ST17, Tavcom sales manager Andrew Saywell described CTSP as ‘recognition where recognition is due for engineers’. Andrew made the point that while the NSI and SSAIB inspected security installation companies, and security industry bodies such as ASIS UK and the Security Institute were for security managers, installers and engineers by comparison were a ‘forgotten lot’. He pointed also to Germany where engineers are highly thought of, and wanted the same for the UK.

To gain the CTSP status, and the right to use that postnominal, you need a minimum of 12 months’ experience in the field; and to have a level three qualification (equivalent to A level in the school classroom, one of the typical systems training courses that Tavcom offer). You have to show knowledge of electronic principles; and provide two references. As for cost, the application fee is £25, and if after vetting you pass, the annual registration fee is £50.
