UK speaker in NY

by Mark Rowe

Among the speakers from the FBI and transatlantic heads of corporate security at a conference in New York to discuss counter-terrorism and organised crime was Richard Bingley, a Senior Lecturer in Security at Buckinghamshire New University.

He addressed around 100 delegates at the Terrorist Information New York Group (TINYg), on the US and UK’s relationship in countering terrorism and extremism. The group that also meets in London comprises businesses, emergency services, governments, seeking to share good practice around emergency prevention and response. It was set up after the 9-11 attacks. Richard is pictured left, presented with a commemorative plaque by TINYg’s Vice Chairman Mario J Doyle.

Richard is Course Leader for the Certificate in Security Management at Bucks New University and teaches on the University’s MSc Organisational Resilience and BA (Hons) Security Consultancy courses. He said: “I spoke at the conference about the nature of the special relationship between the UK and USA and the lessons that both countries can learn from the past in countering the threats from terrorism, and drivers of radicalisation.

“Part of my speech was about widening partnership with other countries, including major emerging markets who are facing similar threats. I was invited to speak because I have researched, written about and been involved in shaping counter-terrorism responses in the UK for 15 years, including delivering presentations to the UK National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO).

“Many people including policy makers are struggling for answers around countering terrorism. The forum is critical because it brings first-responders, business leaders and academics around the table to knowledge-share about effective response strategies and lessons from history.”

Also on the forum panel were William Sweeney, the New York FBI’s Special Agent in charge of Counter Terrorism, and Richard Frankel, Special Agent in Charge of the Criminal Division in the New York FBI; and another Brit, Jason Towse, Managing Director of Mitie Total Security Management.

Richard, who is based in the Department of Security and Resilience at Bucks New University, is the author of Terrorism: Just the Facts, published by Heinemann Education.
