Birmingham traffic management

by Mark Rowe

Professional Security magazine has featured what was Centro, now Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) security and CCTV over the years, most recently on the eve of the covid pandemic, in the April 2020 print edition.

Now some 200 IDIS cameras supporting ANPR image analysis software from 4Sight has been deployed in the West Midlands region. The cameras are for highways management: analysis of traffic flows, for minimising congestion, and so reducing journey times.

The installer was Total Integrated Solutions (TIS), who have a West Midlands office in Coleshill. Installed are IDIS 3MP DC-B3303X cameras integrated with 4Sight’s self-configuring adaptive appearance modelling software. The light handling of the IDIS cameras is optimised by the 4Sight software, to give automatic compensation for variations in light levels. Each camera can cover up to four lanes of bi-directional traffic with no lane overlap. Independent comparative testing has shown the solution to be ten times more accurate than conventional systems, it’s claimed.

Infrastructure in place was used to mount the cameras, reducing costs, and cutting out any need for disruptive civil works. Likewise at at the Birmingham monitoring centre, infrastructure was integrated with the IDIS and 4Sight solution, and open architecture offers future-proofing and system scalability, the developers add.

Now, with more than half of the network fully operational, around three million data points are being generated daily, allowing real-time analysis of traffic flows, resulting in faster response to emergencies, obstructions, and any congestion build-up. With a real-time overview across 11 key routes, traffic managers can intervene if an incident occurs.

Reiss Spear, Sales Manager, IDIS Europe, pictured, said: “This project is making a significant and positive contribution to the economy of the West Midlands. 4Sight is a trusted IDIS technology partner, and we are pleased to work with them to deliver this ground-breaking ANPR solution.”
