Eurostar contract

by Mark Rowe

Mitie has renewed for another three years (with the option for an extra two years) its contract with Eurostar, the company running the high speed passenger rail service between LondonSt Pancras and Continental Europe. The contract will see the FM contractor provide security services at St Pancras International in central London, as well as the Eurostar Engineering Centre in Temple Mills in east London. The contract firm, which has provided services to Eurostar for over 14 years, was awarded the contract following a competitive retender process.

The contractor will continue to provide passenger security screening, train searches, hosting e-gates (electronic gates for passenger entry), CCTV monitoring at Temple Mills, and overseeing access to restricted zones across both sites. With this contract renewal, Mitie adds that it will be bringing dedicated transport sector security analysis and updates, via its Intelligence Security Operations Centre (ISOC) in Northampton.

With more than half of colleagues having worked on the contract for over 15 years, Mitie’s security officers are experienced in supporting the smooth running of services, creating a positive and safe experience for millions of passengers travelling on its trains each year, the firm says.

Jason Towse, Managing Director, Business Services, Mitie, said: “Having provided services to Eurostar for over 14 years, we’re delighted to be continuing our strong relationship, as we continue to deliver security services at St Pancras and Temple Mills. We look forward to continuing to work together over the coming years to ensure the millions of passengers travelling on the Eurostar annually enjoy safe and pleasant journeys.”

As featured in the January print edition of Professional Security Magazine, RMT trade union members working on the Eurostar security contract for Mitie were due to go on strike over Christmas, only for the action to be called off after the company made an improved pay offer.
