Access Control

Gherkin access

A case study from 30 St Mary’s Axe, more commonly known as The Gherkin, and its access control system.

The City building with some 41 floors sought to replace the access control system, CBRE 30 St Mary Axe Management Ltd wanted a solution which could be rolled out, and allowed tenants to manage their own areas.

After a competitive tender process, CBRE worked with Grosvenor Technology and Universal Security Systems on what the firms call a tailored system using Grosvenor’s SATEON platform. As a browser-based access control system, SATEON was deployed without the need for extra software to be installed on each of the tenants’ server space. The integrated system has almost 200 card readers and SATEON door controllers and allows door statuses to be viewed through a fully navigable map interface.

A fully partitioned, Microsoft SQL backend database allows each tenant to manage their own area, including reports on staff attendance and identity card access, whilst CBRE managers maintain overall control of the building. Grosvenor Technology provided technical support throughout the set-up by phone and on-site.

Danny Moody, Security Manager from CBRE 30 St Mary Axe Management Ltd said: “Having worked with staff from Grosvenor Technology in the past, we knew the quality and work ethic we could expect from them. The SATEON package was particularly attractive to us as it allowed tenants to manage their areas via any web browser, anywhere in the world. This saved us considerable time hardwiring new connections into our server. I can honestly say that Grosvenor Technology’s staff were key in ensuring that the installation and mobilisation period worked as smoothly as possible. As a UK based company, they were able to assist Universal Security Systems whenever required and the follow up support with regards to training, bespoke alterations and troubleshooting has been first class. I’m satisfied that we made the right decision when choosing SATEON as our new access control platform.”

Grosvenor say that their SATEON can be adapted to meet the requirements of any business. The system offers inter-operability with a range of third party hardware, from CCTV cameras and card readers, to intruder and fire alarms. The central server which supports the front-end also ensures that any updates are applied to all users without the need for IT support or additional local server space, the makers add.
