SIA G8 checks

by Mark Rowe

Security Industry Authority (SIA) investigators carried out checks on 450 private security operatives working at the G8 Summit sites in County Fermanagh from Sunday to Tuesday, June 16 to 18. No offences were found.

The SIA worked with partner agencies and the private security industry, especially the two security companies contracted to provide security at the summit. This was to ensure that there was an integrated approach to the checking of security personnel and to provide assurance to the organisers. During the SIA-led operation, staff checked security guards working on the G8 sites.

These checks were besides the accreditation process and intelligence checks by the SIA and others before the start G8.

Dave Humphries, Director Partnerships and Interventions, said: “The high level of co-operation received from the industry and enforcement partners helped to ensure that there was full compliance with the law during the G8 Summit.

“It is pleasing to see how far the private security industry has progressed since regulation was introduced, highlighted by the industry making an effective and successful contribution to the security at this major event. The SIA is grateful to the security companies and all the security operatives for their co-operation in relation to the G8 Summit.”
