British Library contract

by Mark Rowe

The British Library next door to St Pancras station in central London has some 1.6 million visitors a year. It’s open seven days; those visitors may go to read books (or indeed Professional Security!?) or view priceless exhibits, or just for a coffee (pictured).

Last year, a secuity services contract went to the guard firm Pilgrims. Ed O’Leary, the contractor’s Senior Operations Manager, London says: “We have a diverse cross-section of the public who attend the library which means the types of security challenges vary, from making sure we understand the people that want to use the library for everything it can offer, from people abusing the public space, to elderly people tripping and falling. These are general issues across London which links to the fact that the library is a public space. Our team ensure the utmost safety of every visitor. We only employ guards who fundamentally care about their duties and have the ability and confidence to communicate effectively with the public.”

Peter Brooks, Head of Security and Safety Management at the Library, said: “The British Library is faced with numerous daily challenges. Pilgrims provided a solution on day one. In fact, performance has improved and we have received fewer complaints. Pilgrims has already begun to understand our DNA and bring new energy to the contract.”
