At the recent 2013 SIA conference in London, on November 20, Gordon Meldrum, Director Organised Crime from the National Crime Agency (NCA), spoke about the new agency and tackling serious and organised crime.
He gave an overview of the NCA, which is in four ‘commands’: Organised Crime Command (OCC), Border Policing Command (BPC), and Economic Crime Command (ECC) and Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP).
He separated the public perception of organised crime (such as shown in US TV series as The Sopranos) from the reality, of serious and organised criminals working from local to global levels, doing various crime types, some complex and sophisticated, and seeking power and profit. He said that the UK needed more than a law enforcement and criminal justice response. Hence the recently-announced serious and organised crime strategy.

Terri Jones, the new Director General for Skills for Security (SfS), talked about training and skills in the private security industry.
She ran through the work of SfS; 2014 will see a labour market report published; more work on national occupational standards; and new level three apprenticeship qualifications, in cyber security; and security operations. Apprenticeships generally in industry are changing, too.
