Safely at the Hampshire Hoppit

by Mark Rowe

The Hampshire Hoppit, a trail running event, took place recently through the North Wessex Downs. The security and traffic management contract company, Topher Ltd, was on hand to ensure the safety of the runners at key road crossings.

On Sunday, June 19, Hampshire-based Topher deployed five traffic marshals trained to stop, direct and divert traffic. They have such police-style powers to do so through the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS), as managed by Hampshire Police. This authority is essential when management of traffic on the public highway is required.

The organiser of the Hampshire Hoppit was the Basingstoke and Mid-Hants Athletic Club. Tim Fowler of the club said afterwards: “The expert operation by Topher was thoroughly professional. I have seen a video of the crossing at Junction 2 on the old Newbury Road, and it was absolutely perfect – exactly how I had hoped that the operation would be run. Safe, efficient, and minimal impact to both the runners and the traffic.”
