Calais risk warning

by Mark Rowe

After further night-time violence outside Calais, the UK trade body the Road Haulage Association (RHA) says it’s deeply concerned that the lives of UK bound truckers are now at greater risk than ever.

Migrants have clashed with French police on the Port of Calais approach roads and at Eurotunnel and a number of arrests were made.

The RHA has warned of the risk, as featured in the August 2017 print issue of Professional Security; in June a van driver died when the vehicle caught fire where migrants barricaded the A16 near Calais.

RHA Director of Policy, Rod McKenzie, speaking on BBC Radio Kent said: “Our members are terrified and angry. Gangs of marauding migrants, often armed with iron bars are attacking their vehicles. The police are heavily outnumbered and it’s clear that they can no longer cope with the ever increasing numbers trying to make the crossing to the UK.

“We hear of drivers refusing to make the journey between Dover and Calais while many hauliers are re-routing their vehicles around the port at a cost of many thousands of pounds.”
