Lincoln goes wireless

by Mark Rowe

Wireless radios have been deployed in Lincoln, as 14 wireless data links in support of an IP networked CCTV system, covering the city and public spaces.

The new wireless network is part of the City of Lincoln Council’s Vision 2020 project. The council has a three-year plan to build a ‘Smart City’ including in a new transport hub. Previously the county town’s CCTV was transmitted on traditional analogue fibre circuits.

To install the wireless network, the council used security installer Videcom Security Ltd, which chose Siklu as their wireless partner after previous work in Watford, the London borough of Richmond, Ipswich and Cambridge, where Siklu hardware had been deployed.

Lincoln has Siklu’s mmWave EtherHaul E-band radios to deliver 1 Gbps full duplex capacity for the main backhaul resilient ring over the 80 GHz frequency. Using Siklu’s Layer 2 switch to deliver resiliency and diversity routing, the network provides ‘mission critical’ up-time with automatic fail-over. Videcom installed Siklu’s 60 GHz V-band frequency radios to connect some 300 CCTV cameras at street level, including city wide urban traffic cameras.

As elsewhere in UK local government, cost savings on transmission and reduction in maintenance helped to reduce the lifetime cost of the new system.

Bill Mead, Managing Director of Essex-based Videcom, said: “At Videcom we have always been impressed with the level of support and in particular Siklu’s commitment to training of our engineers and the ongoing direct support offered. We are pleased to work closely with Siklu and are looking forward to the next project.”

Spare transmission bandwidth is allowing the planning of smart services to the City as well as Wi-Fi connectivity and car park data sharing.
