Personal privacy rights talk

by Mark Rowe

The upcoming changes to data protection law will require organisations to make the personal privacy rights of consumers a top priority, according to the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham.

Speaking at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) annual Data Protection Practitioners’ Conference at Manchester Central, Ms Denham said that the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), which come into force in May 2018, will give people stronger rights to be informed about how their personal information is used.

She pointed to the bigger fines that regulators such as the ICO will be allowed to hand out: “The GDPR gives regulators greater enforcement powers. If an organisation can’t demonstrate that good data protection is a cornerstone of their business policy and practices, they’re leaving themselves open to enforcement action that can damage their public reputation and possibly their bank balance. That makes data protection a boardroom issue.”
