Commenting on the Government’s proposed legislation in the December 3 Queen’s Speech, ACPO President Ken Jones said:
“The Policing Bill holds much of promise for the public and police service alike including its renewal of valued policing traditions based on, accountability and responsiveness to neighbourhood needs.
“ACPO supports this broad vision of the future of policing and work is underway to meet the principles as set out in the policing green paper, with forces and frontline officers already working hard to deliver some of its key changes.
“We welcome the Government’s continued commitment to assist the police service in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and to strengthen our ability to protect our ports and borders.
“The culture that lies at the heart of crime can only be solved by tackling its underlying causes, in partnership with agencies from across the criminal justice sector, families and all those with an interest in safe and secure neighbourhoods.
“We particularly welcome the renewed push by the Government to tackle the causes of alcohol related violence by challenging and making accountable those in the industry who have a duty to act responsibly and have for too long been able to export its negative costs of alcohol onto our streets.
“We will continue to work with the Government to ensure we deliver for the public we serve, while protecting what is best about accountable, responsive and politically impartial British policing.”
