lectronic component supply specialist Quadtronics made a contribution to the installation of a CCTV and surveillance system to the Africa Cup of Nations 2008 football tournament during February 2008 in Ghana.
Played across four venues in four cities across Ghana, the tournament required a custom-designed CCTV facility to be added to an IP-based network originally provided by Pro Security Ghana Ltd (PSGL) for the nation’s 50th anniversary celebrations last year. PSGL was again called upon to provide the Cup of Nations system.
What they say
Martin Parry, technical adviser to the company,
says: "Between the four venues, we had feeds from over 200 cameras, all coming into a central IP network control centre in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. The cable requirements for the stadia were a combination of analogue and IP. Quadtronics had previously supplied over 60 km of fibre-optic cable to PSGL for a previous project, and for the Africa Cup of Nations they supplied a further 75 kilometers of CTI25 cable to the venues."
Michele Howells, MD of Quadtronics, adds that the cable supplied had to be capable of withstanding the elements in this most demanding of applications. "We used a coax cable with a physical foam dielectric, copper foil and copper braid. This was sheathed in a highly robust UG sheath, making it suitable for environments in high humidity and heat. The foam dielectric makes the cable watertight and less likely to kink during installation, while the copper braid and copper foil give a very high level of performance."
