A removable video data cassette was originally developed for use by police in their custody suites, where the customer wished to retain video and audio recordings for one year.
The manufacturers Tecton describe it as aimed at applications that require huge archiving periods combined with the option of immediate data retrieval. Data is sent from your digital recorder to the storage unit. There are six large disks in one ‘tape’. When a user has filled six disks (or after an archiving time, such as one month), or in the event of an emergency, a user can remove the ‘tape’ by pulling out the draw. After removing your draw, put in another one, and you are ready to store data again. Months of recordings instantly removed!
Tecton’s data storage unit is only 1U, but contains six large hard drives in each draw. The product is capable of several months worth of recording. According to the company, other applications include government, town centres and transport networks. A user, the makers add, can record and store images and audio together for months or even years. Each cassette can hold 6TB, and so capable of recording for months per draw.
