An intelligence system to support the Los Angeles Police Department – Counter Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau, has been provided by a UK firm.

The LAPD Counter Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau is comprised of the Major Crimes Division and Emergency Services Division (ESD). The Major Crimes division includes Criminal Conspiracy, Criminal Investigations, Intelligence Investigations, Surveillance, and Liaison Sections. The Emergency Services Division (ESD) is comprised of Field and Community Support, Emergency Planning, Operations, and Hazardous Devices Sections. In short, the Counter- Terrorism Bureau is responsible for planning, response and intelligence for LAPD.

East Kilbride-based Memex will be expanding its operations throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area to support this and other area deployments. The system will connect divisional units in a sensitive, but unclassified environment, providing 24/7 intelligence and analysis capabilities in a single centre, according to the firm. Officers in the division will now have access to a system that can gather, analyse and disseminate information, it is claimed.

Once operational, the system will allow LAPD to gather, collate, track, analyze and disseminate intelligence information; including counter-terrorism leads. The system will also be used to counteract organised criminal activity including street gangs, money laundering and high volume crimes.

What they say

According to Lieut Bob Fox, spokesperson for the LAPD, “Our greatest fear in the battle against terrorism is missing a small piece of information out of the thousands in our possession that could have led us to the prevention of a terrorist attack in the Los Angeles region, nation and other countries. The Memex software solution is an excellent tool to help us more clearly track and connect those dots.”

“Memex is excited by the opportunity to support the development of the LAPD effort,” said Memex General Manager, Mike Himley, “This initiative and our expansion into the Greater Los Angeles area underscores the growing market demand for our intelligence solution and reflects our commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies at the forefront of the battle against crime and terrorism.”
