New London mayor Boris Johnson has promised to work “flat out” to cut crime, among other things in the capital.
And Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair congratulated Mr Johnson on his election as Mayor of London.
"I look forward to developing an effective working relationship between the Met and the new Mayor," said Sir Ian.
"Tackling crime and delivering a responsive and quality policing service is a priority for Londoners and this was reflected in the high profile given to these issues during the election campaign.
"The support of London’s Mayor is vitally important for police officers as they go about the difficult and often dangerous job they do on the public’s behalf.
"I have no doubt that such support will be forthcoming and I give my assurance that the Met, in turn, will strive to maintain the unprecedented levels of crime reduction we have achieved in recent years whilst delivering effective local community policing and protecting London from terrorism."
And meanwhile David Cameron, David Davis and Boris Johnson launched plans to introduce crime mapping to the UK and give people much more information about the level of crime in their neighbourhoods.
A Tory policy paper, ‘Giving the public a crime map’, lays out plans to make every police force release crime statistics on a monthly basis and publish them in map form.
According to the Conesrvatives the information available from crime mapping allows local people to assess crime levels in their area and hold the police to account.
David Cameron said: "Crime mapping has revolutionised the way they fight crime across American cities – and it can do the same here."
Proposals also include quarterly ‘Beat Meetings’ in each neighbourhood, to give residents the opportunity to quiz police officers on what’s being done to tackle crime.
