MPEG Encoder

by msecadm4921

Digital CCTV firm Acam Technology has launched an MPEG-2 single-channel encoder.

It enables an integrator to distribute video and audio without the extra cost of installing coaxial camera cabling.

The encoder – from South African DVR manufacturer Cathexis – is integrated with the same company’s catSite site management software to interface with existing corporate networks. It uses Ethernet connectivity to provide cost savings over systems that historically have had to use fibre for video transmission because of the distances involved, according to the firms.

Encoders installed on the network are configured in Cathexis’ catPro software. Full integration with the catSite interface means each encoder simply appears as another camera on the network, without the need for additional hardware.

The compression ratio and resolution are scaled independently for each encoder, providing the end user with optimum image quality under all conditions and with the ability to optimise the available bandwidth of the TCP/IP network.

"The new encoder has considerable benefits for end users seeking to upgrade their CCTV system," says Acam managing director Chris West. "A high quality DVR solution is now available without the need for new cameras or extensive, expensive cabling."
