Police and nightclub owners have joined forces to ensure nights out in Newbury are fun-packed but pack no punches.
Joint working has led to the introduction of measures that have so far reduced the amount of alcohol-related violence in Newbury. Police and the owners, of Liquid Nightclub in Market Square, Luminar Leisure, have decided to lead the initiative and joined forces to curb the number of injuries and incidents caused by alcohol and to continue to tackle and reduce injuries caused by broken bottles and glasses. Most injuries in late night venues are caused by people taking drink on to the dancefloor, Thames Valley Police report.
Liquid has introduced a doorman who has sole responsibility for ensuring no drinks are taken on to the dance floor. Doormen have also been working with police in the evening, wearing high visibility jackets and taking responsibility for people in and around the club.
The change has had such dramatic impact that it has now been made a formal part of the night spot’s licensing agreement.
Manager, Nick Jackson, says: "We maintain an excellent working relationship with the police and work closely with them to maintain our high standards and quality of late night entertainment. We are aware of the dangers involving bottles and glasses and take a zero tolerance attitude on antisocial or violent behaviour as part of our social responsibility policy. There are many incidents whereby drinks can be spilled, arguments can escalate and trouble can ensue. We can take small steps to ensure these incidents do not escalate and with high standards of operation, deliver a safe and friendly environment for our customers."
The campaign to reduce alcohol-related disorder in Newbury town centre is part of the ongoing Thames Valley Police Safer Streets campaign.
