There are many security specialists looking for work, but how can you be sure you have recruited the right person? asks Richard Plaistowe, MD of Reading-based RIG Investigator & Security Careers Ltd (RISC).
The SIA licensing and tighter regulation of the industry goes a long way to ensuring that your specialist is actually a specialist, but there is a lot more to getting the right person for the work that you are looking to do. Getting the right ‘team fit’ and attitude are as important as the skills and ability. RISC (RIG Investigator & Security Careers) is a new staffing company, built out of RIG Police Recruit, which was set up in 2003 to place former police officers back into the police force on an interim and temporary basis. Some 300 contractors and interim staff are working for clients at any time. Skills and knowledge are retained in the police that would have been lost as officers retire.

Moment’s notice

The team at RISC is made up of ex police officers and military personnel with combined recruitment knowledge in excess of 20 years. They have a database of 3,000 investigators and security professionals covering the UK ensuring suitable individuals for companies across the country. Because the candidates are looking for interim work they are able to start work at a moment’s notice and will commit to a project as they are not looking for a permanent contract. It is important that when you take someone on a non permanent basis, you have the confidence that he or she can do the job you require from them. For that reason the consultants at RISC go through a vetting process which will include meeting the candidate, discussions with previous employers to confirm quality of work undertaken and formal identification and security checks.
