Professor Paul Wilkinson died on August 11, 2011. A pioneer of the academic study of terrorism, he provided theoretical understanding of it in Political Terrorism, published in 1974, and in Terrorism and the Liberal State, published in 1976.
He was a co-founder of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
