At about 6.30am, Friday, September 24, a bright white exploding fireball was seen over England.
Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute (PSSRI) scientists at the Open University have received more than 30 credible witness reports from Cumbria to Dorset. These reports suggest that the fireball travelled from about northwest to southeast across England. Fireballs can be fragments of asteroids or comets, burning up as they pass through the earth’s atmosphere. Fragmentation of a fireball can result in rocky material landing on the surface of the Earth and that’s what the PSSRI scientists want to track down. They need to hear from people who may have seen or recorded the fireball on film or video, to try to pinpoint where parts of it may have landed. They are particularly interested in CCTV footage and are asking people who monitor CCTV to review their tapes between the times of 0625 to 0635 on September 24 to see if there are any visible images in the sky.
