Tyneside Watch

by msecadm4921

Northumbria Police in Ashington and Newbiggin are teaming up with clubs and pubs to target criminal behaviour and drug-taking on licensed premises.

As part of a Pub Watch scheme, anyone who is caught in possession of or supplying a controlled drug will be automatically barred from all the premises.

The move comes as part of a zero tolerance policy towards violence and drugs at all licensed premises in the Ashington and Newbiggin areas.

In support of the scheme police officers are making visits to pubs and clubs to provide reassurance to customers and bar staff.

Ashington Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Yeats said: "Local police have run a number of operations in the area to reduce anti-social behaviour and we are pleased to be working in support of licensees so that pubs and clubs are places people can go to enjoy a night out.

"This scheme will be an important element of our drive to reduce anti social behaviour and support the night time economy."

All the pubs and clubs in Ashington and Newbiggin have signed up to Pub Watch. Pub Watch chairman Rob Miller said: "We want to send out a clear message that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated. licensees are working together with the support of the police.

"Violence in or around any pub or club is not acceptable. Anyone who is aggressive towards staff will be barred. Anyone who is caught with drugs will be barred.

"In the February meeting licensees nominated eight people. These eight people were barred from all the pubs and clubs for a total of 11 and a half years."
