De Montfort University Leicester is making Chief Constable of Leicestershire Constabulary, Matt Baggott, an Honorary Doctor of Letters on Thursday, July 19.
His career in policing began in 1978 in South London and he took his current role in Leicestershire in 2003.
He has earned a national reputation for his expertise in community cohesion and played a role in developing neighbourhood policing across 43 forces.
He said: "I am fortunate to be part of the most fantastic group of people who every day put their hearts and souls in to working both for and with the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to make their communities safer and better places to live and work.
"So while it is a huge personal honour for me to receive this honorary doctorate from a University which is itself very connected with the people of Leicester and the region generally, I also regard it as a recognition of the hard work and achievements of my colleagues in Leicestershire Constabulary."
