The new EU Data Protection Regulation will be making greater demands on organisations to notify of data breaches and deliver effective incident management, says BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.
To help examine some of the consequences of the new regulation and explore solutions, the Information Security Specialist Group (ISSG), part of BCS, with Barclays, is holding a one day seminar, ‘Data Breach & Incident Management.’ The event on September 16 is at Barclays Technology Centre, Radbroke Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire.
Gareth Niblett, Chairman of ISSG explains: “Currently, only certain sectors have to notify the UK regulator of data breaches, but this new regulation will mean that all companies will soon need to put in place a clear and well-practised procedure to ensure that they can notify in time – and thus avoid additional penalties.”
The seminar will explore how companies are implementing targeted incident management capabilities alongside information security best practice and what the expectations are from a government and information commissioner perspective. Speakers will describe the changes an organisation needs to make to be ready for the new ‘EU Data Protection Regulation’, with a specific focus on reducing potential for data breaches and how to manage those data breaches with a robust incident management capability.
Gareth adds: “This seminar will be of interest to a wide audience, from security and risk professionals to CISOs and data privacy specialists. Our speakers will provide overviews of relevant standards, regulations and approaches, without the sales pitch. Customer data needs to be protected and new EU regulations will provide greater reassurance through accountability and improved capability. Effective, timely detection and response is key to managing incidents and mitigating the worst aspects of a data breach. We hope to both answer and raise questions.”
