Crash-rated mobile gate

by Mark Rowe

Zaun’s new PAS 68 MultiFence gate for securing events survived crash tests at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) in Warwickshire. The product disabled a 2.5 tonne vehicle driven at the gate at 30 mph.

MIRA has offered crash testing and research in safety development for 50 years, working with vehicle makers and other manufacturers to test and certify to PAS 68 vehicle attack ratings, Euro NCAP, European, US and other safety standards.

The five-metre gates were mounted in the middle of a 2.7m line of MultiFence with no below ground foundations or permanent mountings. Design engineers at the Wolverhampton-based firm devised a coupling mechanism to continue the PAS 68 cable system through the gates to the fencing on either side.

The perimeter fence company developed its PAS 68 Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) enhanced MultiFence especially to resist hostile vehicle and mob attacks at the London 2012 Olympics. MultiFence has just been granted a patent by the UK Intellectual Property Office.

Zaun delivered several thousand metres of HVM fencing to secure temporary Olympics venues including the beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade, Wembley Stadium and Arena, Greenwich Park, the O2 Arena, the Royal Artillery Barracks, St James’s Park Newcastle, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and the Weymouth sailing village.

The firm also worked with Olympic Park contractor Skanska and stadium contractor BAM Nuttall to secure the 17km boundary of the main Olympic Park (pictured) at Stratford in east London, with a further 1.5km of Zaun fencing providing a ‘ring-within-a-ring’ around the Olympic Stadium.

The firm besides has delivered fences for the English Football Association’s training centre at St George’s Park in Staffordshire, Meydan Racecourse in Dubai and the 2013 G8 Summit in Northern Ireland. Zaun installed over 7km of fencing in ten days – and removed it in six – as part of the £60m security operation for the G8 summit at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland, in summer 2013.
