In Worcesterhire, West Mercia police are appealing for witnesses after a security guard was attacked and cash stolen in a robbery in Malvern yesterday.
At 2.05pm, a security van was delivering cash to the Marks & Spencer store on the Malvern Retail Park, Roman Way, to top up its cashpoint.
As a guard entered the store he was approached by two men and one grabbed the cashbox he was carrying and demanded he let go. When the guard refused, he was pushed in the chest and the second man hit him in the back of the head several times with a metal bar or similar weapon.
He was wearing a helmet and was not seriously injured but the assault made him drop his cashbox and the men stole it and ran off.
They made off in a waiting Renault Scenic, which was a metallic green/gold colour, that drove off towards the A449. The car was later found abandoned in Newland down a track off Madresfield Road, 100m from the junction with the A449.
The two robbers were white; one was wearing a dark hooded top and the other a grey hooded top. Both had their hoods up and their faces were covered with masks or scarves.
Detective Sergeant Chris Percival, who is investigating the incident, said: โWhile the guard has not been seriously injured, being assaulted so violently was a traumatic experience and we need to find those responsible. We would like to hear from anyone who was at the Malvern Retail Park on Monday lunchtime and either saw the robbery take place or any suspicious activity in the car park.
โIt is likely the offenders transferred to another vehicle at the site off Madresfield Road and if anyone saw anything out of the ordinary, please contact us. The track is a popular spot in Newland for dog walkers and walkers so I hope somebody saw something that could help us.โ
