High definition video system

by Mark Rowe

Tyco Security Products, part of Tyco, the fire protection and security company, announces Illustra Edge. The multi-national describes it as a high definition video system combining an IP camera, pre-installed exacqVision Edge video management system (VMS) software and SD storage.

The new Illustra Edge product line provides everything needed to connect and auto-configure in minutes, it’s claimed. The product is said to be suitable for a small installations of up to ten cameras — or remote sites where server hardware installations are impractical; as a means to deploy a high-definition IP video system without separate server hardware installation and configuration costs, since the server software and video storage is on board the camera. For system set up, you mount the camera, connect and start monitoring live and recorded video. The product comes pre-configured with an included server licence for simple, automatic installation. For larger applications and enterprise solutions a licence upgrade to exacqVision Edge+ makes this solution expandable to unlimited servers.

With the included exacqVision Edge software, users can view live or recorded video from multiple Illustra Edge devices or server-based recorders at once The included VMS software allows users to export video search results, display alarm events on screen and get replay of both video and audio events via exacqReplay. The exacqVision client software runs on Windows, Linux and Mac computers. Also, users can install the free web service software on a separate PC to view video on a web browser, tablet or smartphone.

The recording offers reliability as there is no single point of server failure, the company says. If one camera fails, the others will continue to stream and record video. The camera to server traffic is internal and not on the customer’s network providing the firm says low overall network traffic.

Julian Inman, Product Marketing Manager, Video, EMEA, Tyco Security Products, said: “This is a complete solution for customers looking to create their own video surveillance solution without added costs of servers and complex installation. Whether it’s a small business or retail store, or someone who needs to supplement their enterprise system because of a remote locale or intermittent wireless coverage, the Illustra Edge solution can be deployed to fit their needs.”

Illustra Edge comes in three camera models: the Illustra Pro 5MP Fisheye , the Illustra Pro 2MP Compact Mini-Dome and Illustra Pro 2MP Compact Mini-Bullet .

The Illustra Edge fisheye camera has in-camera dewarping offering real-time 180 degree / 360 degree panoramic views or a quad view delivering 4 independent “Quad” 4×3 normalised video streams. Its 5MP capacity gives it the power of two to four cameras for many indoor applications, the makers say. The Compact Mini-Dome and Mini-Bullet offer high definition video with a wide field of view, infra-red illumination and wide dynamic range. Although discreet, these cameras are equipped with multiple viewing angles, including corridor mode, making them useful for hallways, aisles and alleys, according to the makers.
