Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

by Mark Rowe

First Response Group (FRG), the security and facilities management contractor and a member of the ACS Pacesetters, took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge recently to raise funds for a charity, Education for Africa.

Led by FRG SHEQ manager, Michael Wormald, the six completed the 24-miles in just over 12 and a half hours, scaling 1500m of ascent up Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside (pictured) and Ingleborough peaks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Pictured left to right are Zak Ahmed, Laura Steele, Carl Reed, Danny Wallace Luke Whitley and Michael Wormald from FRG at the top of the first peak, Whernside.

FRG have been supporting Education for Africa for the past 18 months by sponsoring the school feeding at Isiolo Children’s home in Kenya. The school was set up in 2013 with an aim of helping the orphans and the vulnerable children from the local community and its surrounding areas.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge fundraising activity arose from a discussion during an FRG Employee Engagement Committee Meeting. FRG has pledged to fund match total sponsorship raised from the challenge up to £5,000 to show its support for employees who give their valuable time to raising funds for charities.

Afterwards, Michael Wormald said: “It was very tough, much tougher than we anticipated, but in true Team FRG fashion we stuck together and motivated each other, all completing the course as a team. Knowing our sponsorship will help give children in Africa access to good education kept us going.”

FRG Co-founder and Director Edgar Chibaka, an African immigrant, added: “I’m delighted the team took on this challenge to support such an important charity. Sub Saharan Africa has some of the lowest education rates in the world with 60% of the population over the age of 15 unable to read or write. The vital funds raised by Team FRG will help students have a brighter future”
