UAE museum contract

by Mark Rowe

A £1.5m contract to supply high-security shutters, sectional overhead doors and security grills for the new 24,000 square metre (260,000 sq ft) Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi, UAE; one of the world’s highest profile buildings, has gone to a UK firm.

Due for completion in 2015, Louvre Abu Dhabi will be housing works of art from around the world. The contract with Gilgen Door Systems includes the supply of SR4 security rated shutters providing physical protection for the museum.

David Cerquella, Managing Director of Gilgen Door Systems in the UK, says: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and to be associated with a building of such global multi-cultural importance. With security being a top priority for the museum, it is significant that Gilgen Security Shutters were chosen and further testament to the innovation, strength and quality of our Rolegard high security range.”

Made in the UK and meeting ‘Police Preferred’ and ‘Secured by Design’ standards, the makers say that their Rolegard shutters help facilities to reduce security threats through target hardening. Tested by BRE in the UK against anti-jacking, prising, gouging, impact, cutting and drilling, the Rolegard SR4 Security Shutter was the first to achieve LPS1175, Issue 7, Level 4 certification and is the only one to have passed a supplementary test for stainless steel profiles.

The Rolegard units will be supplied in a variety of sizes up to 7.0 metres high by 8.2 metres wide. Each shutter is electrically operated and works with the building control centre and security system, giving control over opening and closing sequences. The shutters are specified with stainless steel profiles which further add to their durability and aesthetics, the makers add.

The contract was awarded after a trial of three full size Rolegard shutters within a working prototype of the Louvre building. The trial was designed to test the suitability of equipment to operational requirements. The door firm says that it will complete the manufacture and supply of all of the doors to the agreed project timescales with installation training for engineers, technical support and handover commissioning. A dedicated project management team has also been put in place by Gilgen.
