Hard drives

WD, a Western Digital company, has added to its WD Purple line of 3.5-inch hard drives for surveillance applications. The US firm has released the 6 TB capacity. Designed for video use, the hard drives are for use in home and small business security systems with up to eight hard drives and up to 32 high-definition (HD) cameras. Available The hard drives are offered in capacities from 1 TB up to 6 TB.

Matt Rutledge, senior vice president and general manager of WD’s Storage Technology group, said: “Video surveillance has long been a pioneering Internet-of-Things application. Driven by machine-to-machine interaction between high-resolution, high bit-rate video cameras and high-capacity surveillance video recorders, IoT brings access and big data analytics to improve user’s security.”

The hard drives feature AllFrame which according to the makers reduces video frame loss, improves playback and increases the number of drive bays supported. The product includes firmware upgrades. With low power consumption crucial in high-temperature always-on systems, IntelliSeek calculates the best seek speeds for the system workload, for lower power use and less noise and vibration.
