School IT

by msecadm4921

Products from Colchester based laptop security firm, LapSafe Products (a division of FRAB limited), have helped Philip Morant School and College to overcome IT security issues, the company reports.

In 2002 the college embarked on an ICT project to provide laptops to all 100 teaching staff. In 2004 the school introduced a laptop purchase scheme into Year 12 in the college. Initially a pilot study, this rollout was so successful that the college plans to introduce laptops for the next intake of Year 12 in September.

With expensive – and mobile – IT equipment on site, security and battery re-charging were issues. Students are responsible for their own laptops but need safe storage when they are not in use. Additionally, the infrastructure of the college does not provide sufficient power outlets for the amount of battery re-charging that would be required.

The college purchased three Ambassador units from LapSafe Products. Each unit houses 25 laptops and has a small footprint that minimises space demands in the library where they are, the firm reports. The unit provides for safe re-charging while laptops are in storage, and means that valuable sockets are not in use nor is the school’s electrical supply overloaded.

What they say

Deputy Head, Leigh Hunter, says: "The units give us the facility to re-charge the laptops quickly, easily and safely, which we would not otherwise be able to do. This means that students can work uninterrupted during lessons throughout the day."

LapSafe Products also supply mobile SmartLine Mentor cabinets for the science and college blocks at the school. These are equipped with laptops for use in lessons as required, rather than personally allocated to individual students. The cabinets are fully mobile and in the case of the college block allows teachers to ensure that all students have access to a laptop in lessons when required.

For more information about laptop security ring LapSafe Products on 0845 230 1010.
