Ealing fines for street mess

by Mark Rowe

We featured the ACS Pacesetters company Kingdom’s environmental protection services in our October 2015 print issue.

Kingdom started providing such a service for Ealing Council on Wednesday, September 23, and in the first week issued 320 fines, all for littering, which amounts to £25,000 of fines. Anyone caught dropping litter, dumping rubbish, spitting or allowing their dogs to foul in the street in public places is being fined £80 by Kingdom’s uniformed officers, who patrol daily across the west London borough as a deterrent. Kingdom is working at no cost to the council, instead taking a share of the fines issued. Residents of Ealing can report littering and dog fouling online at www.ealing.gov.uk/reportit.

Kingdom’s work in Ealing has been reported in a number of local publications, including the Ealing Times, Get West London and This Is Local London. Kingdom also provides environmental protection services to neighbouring Harrow Council, who do work with Ealing Council. This means that persistent environmental problems which spill over the two borough’s boundaries can be the focus of a co-ordinated response.

Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure said: “We spend £4.5m each year cleaning up after people who feel it is ok, to litter our streets with rubbish, chewing gum, spitting or dog mess. Ealing residents are sick of seeing it and paying to get it cleaned up through their taxes. The changes we are making will turn the tide against these selfish individuals, who are committing these offences and deal with them with these on the spot penalty notices.

“By working together with residents, the police, contractors and partners, we want to improve the environment in our borough for everyone to enjoy.”
