Roy's Monthly Gossip

It’s October so happy Halloween

by Mark Rowe

It’s also the month to hype up your sales team, so it seems.

Gary Sykes has left Direct CCTV and started with his own company which are UK representatives. Now Gary worked for the installer Direct CCTV that is, Chris Percy, not the distributor CCTV Direct whose MD is Mark Raine. Everyone seemed to be confused by that, for some reason. Anyway Gary has his own company called Source Partnerships Ltd. They represent companies that are not necessarily based here in the UK. He has done a deal with BCD Video which is an American OEM manufacture specialising in IP storage. They were awarded the Milestone Systems 2012 partner of the year – earlier this year – and they distribute their products through Anixter here in the UK. Gary’s role is raise their profile through the many installers, consultants and end users he knows. Now Gary has been in the industry for some time. I first met him when he worked for NVT but as you know he went off to Samsung and a few others but has settled back into his own business. Now is it just me, or, do you agree that he looks like David Tennant? Who, I hear you cry; yes, correct, the Dr Who actor (OK, a few generations ago if you are a Dr Who follower) but I have seen Gary’s mode of transport and it’s not a blue police box.

Gary Rowden has joined Norbain as the Divisional Director as of September 17; one assumes this is to replace Amanda who recently left to go back into the IT world. As you know Gary only left Samsung last month. He started at Norbain some years ago, left and went to Anixter; so is back home so to speak.

Rob Clarke has returned to Sony. You may recall Rob was there some years ago, and left to go to Mitsubishi (where did they go?) and after a short while working for a couple of installers ended up at TDSi. He has been out the industry for a while but has settled back with the European sales team. Not many of you will know this, but Rob is a keen shooter; so you will often find him down the range in his home town of Milton Keynes. I wonder if that how he gets his orders? Sign, or I will shoot you!?

Tyco Security Products have been really busy and have been recruiting a new sales team in their intrusion department. Paul Andrews joins them from Risco to cover the North; anything north of Birmingham that is, including Northern Ireland and Scotland. Paul, you’re going to do some miles, methinks! Andy Newbold is looking after the Midlands, which takes in the east, and London? Yes OK, he is not new as he has been with the Visonic business for some nine years already. Darren Cox has joined them from Bosch; he has the south and Wales; everything that’s left, I imagine. Darren has been in the industry for 15 years now so he knows what he is talking about. The team all report to Alan Riegler who is the UK Sales Director for Tyco Security Products; that’s the whole range, Intruder, CCTV, access, fire and so on, which I believe is a promotion for Alan, so well done.

Y3K have appointed a new International Sales Director, Marco Marzano. Seems Marco speaks fluent French, Spanish, Italian and English (hate him already don’t you?! and he has the looks) and in the last five years has been the sales manager for an access control company in Spain. I also understand that he has at one point worked on IFSEC. Rod Wilson has become the new area sales manager at Cooper Security. Nope, I don’t own them sadly! Now Rod has more than 30 years experience in our industry starting when he was 17; like me, well, I was 16!, He has worked with companies likes of BT Redcare, Southern Monitoring and more recently Westminster Group.

Not to miss out ladies: Luminite have appointed Laura Grainger as their Sales and Marketing manager. The security industry is a new step for Laura as she has more than 20 years’ experience in sales and marketing roles in fine art and interior design.

Finally and talking of sales, Frontline Security Solutions are celebrating their 15th year working in the industry which has seen them now work in 58 countries. Peter McKelvey told me from Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, that they had done it by evolution; in other words, not to grow to fast or to take on too much on at one time and the customer must always come first. Well done and keep on selling.

Charity
As I told you last time, Sharon Mughal from the BSIA has gone and done it for the Kenya Hospice; yep, she jumped out of a ‘plane, very brave and well done Sharon. There is no way I would do that. Likewise Ed Heyden who you will know from Securitworld has cycled 54 miles, from London to Brighton, for his charity the Josh Carrick Foundation. You can still donate to help both if you wish, via the website www.justgiving.com.
