The Sheriffs’ Award

by Mark Rowe

The Sheriffs’ Award is a national award for bravery, celebrating those who have contributed to safeguarding our “people, property or our liberty.” The award was instituted by the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals after the 7-7 bombings in 2005 and is awarded annually by the Sheriffs of the City of London.

Each year in October, after the presentation of the Award to the Principal Recipient at the Company’s Annual Dinner, the Sheriffs launch the Award for the following year. In February the Sheriffs attend a reception in the Judges’ Dining Room at The Old Bailey. The 2023 reception in February was presided over by Aldermanic Sheriff Alastair King and Sheriff Andrew Marsden. The reception started when the Master of the Worshipful Company, Paul Miller welcomed the Sheriffs, Members of the Company and Guests and introduced Sue Jones, Junior Warden who gave a brief history of the Award.

The Award sees the Principal Recipient receiving a trophy, a framed certificate, and a cheque for £5,000. By order of the Sheriffs their name is also permanently inscribed on the Honours Board and in the Book of Honour, both on permanent display at The Old Bailey (pictured). The Sheriffs thanked the Worshipful Company for their continued support for the Award and asked for nominees for 2023.

Nominations are sought from across the UK. The award is open to members of the public as well as members of the Emergency Services, the Armed Forces, and people employed in the Security Industry. If you know someone who deserves to be nominated, submit your nomination on the website at Sheriffs’ Award for Bravery – WCoSP or contact the Clerk, Adrienne Harper on [email protected].
