West Yorkshire Police Band is to play in New York on the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 World Trade Center terror attack. Some 28 members of the force band were flying to New York on September 8.
They are going in their own time and at their own expense and have been busy fund-raising in the past months selling their latest CD.
They will play at events over the four days they are in the city, including a concert in Newark, and a block party before marching from the Brooklyn Bridge into New York City with the British Contingent.
Band Manager Keith Williams said: "It is a great honour and a privilege for the band to be invited back to play in New York on the anniversary of 9/11.
"The service will allow us to pay our own respects to the Britons who died on that terrible day ten years ago and we will ensure that our performance does the service and the force proud." The band comprises of five serving officers, two retired officers, five civilian police staff and 16 others including an Anglican priest, a special constable, a fireman, two students, and two nurses.
