During the festive drink-drive campaign the Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111 received more than 1,700 calls relating to habitual drink drivers, which has so far resulted in the arrest of 51 people for driving over the limit, the charity reports.
Compared to last year calls increased by over 240% following the first national publicity drive. Roy Clark, Director of Crimestoppers says: “The campaign was a success and resulted in over 50 persistent drink drivers being arrested and charged. Every one was a potential killer and I have no doubt lives were saved.”
Rewards not claimed
People who call Crimestoppers (in confidence) may be in line for a cash reward, but few people claim it. This is true of the drink-drive calls too. Roy Clark adds: “Very few of the callers actually claimed a reward, which in most cases would have been about œ150. Most people are happy to give information out of moral duty, but we are considering offering œ500 in every case next year. We hope that people will continue to call Crimestoppers with information on habitual drink or drug-drivers throughout the rest of the year as well, as it is obvious that there are still too many people thinking that they can get away with it.?
